5 Ways to Set Fitness Boundaries When Your Home is Also Your Gym

Many of us are opting to work out at home instead of, or in addition to, the traditional gym setting. But without an encouraging personal trainer or scarily buff gym-goers to egg you on, it might be tricky to get into the groove and create a home workout plan that actually sticks.

And hey, when you’re in the comfort of your living room, it can be hella tempting to separate home life from personal development.

Coming from somebody who was a WFH girl boss long before the rest of the world was forced into it, I understand the seductive call of the sofa after a long day. But don’t fear—we’ve put together 5 tips that will help you set fitness boundaries from home and smash your goals in the process.

Tip #1: Set Yourself up for Success

Have you ever looked at your watch and thought, ‘Wow, the day just ran away from me?!’ Well, you’re not alone!

With work, household chores, family and whatever else you have piled on your plate, you really have to make a conscious effort to work out. And as you know, exercise is often the first thing that gets tossed out the window when you’re pressed for time.

But this can be easily solved by giving yourself set times to work out. Set an alarm, schedule your planned workouts in your online calendar, warn your housemates, write a post-it note to yourself—whatever you need to do to get your sweat sesh in.

Then, all you need to do is get your gym gear on and follow your allocated time. If you still feel really pinched for time, know that you can split your workouts up into short bursts.

In fact, studies have shown that tackling exercise in smaller chunks can be equally as beneficial as longer workouts. Allocating specific times to work out at home will add structure and accountability to your daily routine. Boundary set—now it’s game-time!

Tip #2: Create the Perfect Workout Space

It’s perfectly normal to feel a sense of chaos in your living space, especially when it’s shared with others. Or maybe you’re living alone like me, yet your space is constantly cluttered and messy. Unsurprisingly, when you’re working out at home, these distractions not only pose immediate tripping hazards, but something far worse—an obstacle to reaching your fitness goals.

As my grandma used to say ‘Tidy house, tidy mind,’ and although it pains me to say it, she was right!

It’s important to clear your workout space so there are no distractions. So, set up a safe space and make sure you have enough room to swing your arms around. This will keep you focused on what’s at hand—smashing your next workout!

Tip #3: Mix up Your Workout Routine

The monotony of the daily grind is the price we pay for, well, being alive! And while some daily routines, such as brushing your teeth or making your bed, are unavoidable, your exercise regime doesn’t have to be. So, switch things up on the reg to stay motivated.

Diversifying your training routine does far more than just keeping things interesting. It’ll improve your fitness, encourage you to exercise more and uncover your physical strengths and weaknesses. Using an app like Gymondo, where you can choose from 100s of different workout styles—HIIT, weight training, yoga and more—will keep your workouts exciting and fresh for the long haul.

Tip #4: Track Your Progress

It’s a well-known fact that tracking your fitness progress can help you achieve your goals, which is especially useful when working out from home. Tracking your progress holds you accountable and measures your success quantifiably, which are keys to getting the results you want.

There are a gazillion ways to track your progress, from writing it down on a piece of paper to easily measuring your success in the Gymondo app.

While there’s no one right or wrong way to track your achievements, just know that it’s a great way to see just how awesome you are. After all, the more time and effort you put into your health and wellness, the more likely you are to see results.

Above all, find what works for you and your lifestyle and take it from there.

Tip #5: Prioritize Fun

We’ve all felt the pre-workout dread—you know, when you’d rather do anything than work out?! On days like this, try to imagine how you feel after a workout.

If you’re struggling for workout motivation, get your favorite tunes pumping, put on your most snazzy gym outfit and press play on your favorite Gymondo workout. You’ll be surprised at how much more energy and confidence you’ll have after your workout is over.

Takeaway
