Don’t let missing a workout or sneaking in a donut derail your fitness goals. Even though we may self sabotage ourselves, these slip-ups are so much bigger in our heads than in reality. Sometimes, all you need is the feeling of empowerment to keep your commitment level high.
Every single one of us knows that sticking to anything, especially a fitness routine, isn’t easy. And oftentimes, we’re our own worst enemies. We punish ourselves for missing workouts and succumbing to cravings when in reality, these small slip-ups won’t derail our fitness goals. To keep your commitment level high, you need a strong dose of “empowerment.” Here’s how to stay 100% committed to your fitness and health goals and feel empowered.
Why You Should Commit to Your Health
Have you found yourself saying, “I’ll start next week?” Has “next week” become “next month” or even “next year?” By working out irregularly, you’re not allowing your body to adapt to exercise. When you lack regularity in your training, it’s way easier to postpone workouts for weeks, months or even years.
If you want to see results, you have to give your body the chance to adapt to training. This means incorporating at least two workouts into your weekly routine. Over time, your body will build the strength and stamina it needs to make working out second nature. Not only that, you’re going to feel so much better. Your energy and mood will drastically improve as a result of increased endorphins. Luckily, these endorphins are free and highly addictive! With enough exercise, working out will become so addictive that you simply can’t live without it.
Build Up to It
One of the main reasons people stop working out is because they go too hard the first time. Imagine not having trained for months and you start with a 55-minute HIIT class that completely obliterates you! You wake up the next morning and are so sore you can hardly manage to get out of bed. I’m willing to bet you won’t be headed back to the gym in quite some time.
Going from zero training to a crushing workout your first time back to the gym will not motivate you to continue and may even cause injury. Instead, gradually build up to a level of activity that you’ll feel empowered to do. Start with two 15-20 minute workouts per week. This could include walking, light jogging or a quick bodyweight circuit. If you have no clue where to begin, programs like Gymondo’s Get in Shape Beginner is a perfect place to start and will keep you motivated to keep training.
Make Time for Exercise
If you’re like me, every morning, I check my work calendar and see what meetings are scheduled for that day. But how many of us add “exercise” to our calendar? It might sound like overkill, but planning your weekly exercise schedule in advance will keep you committed to reaching your goals. See where you have a 30 to 45-minute time slot to fit a workout into your busy schedule. Then, prioritize that time for you and only you. It’s your special time for self-care and to feel empowered. Your health and well-being depend on it!
For those of you who simply can’t find the time to exercise, why not add a workout to your morning mix? Ask any fitness expert and they’ll suggest hitting the hay early and getting that workout in before life turns crazy! There’s no question—you’ll feel tired at first and it will take some getting used to, but just think how empowered you’ll feel afterwards. Boom—it’s out of the way and you won’t have to worry about fitting it in at some point during your busy day.
Prioritize Your Health
So, you’ve found a time slot to fit in a workout but now comes the hard part—prioritizing exercise over the many other ways you could spend your free time. After work, many of us want to spend quality time with our family. Others make a beeline to their phone and check what’s happening on social media. From binge-watching TV to cooking dinner or FaceTiming with our friends, there’s always seems to be an excuse to postpone exercise.
But, if your goal is to prioritize your health, try spending a little less time on SoMe, prepping your meals in advance or skipping your favorite Netflix show. And if it’s quality time you crave, why not ask your friends or family members to work out with you? A workout buddy, whether in-person or virtually, makes exercising way more fun and holds you accountable.
Set Fitness Goals
Setting fitness goals gives you more confidence to stick to your workout routine over the long-term. Even if your goal might be six months away, setting short-term goals, like working out two times per week, will keep you on track and makes the process of getting where you want to be way less daunting. These small wins keep you motivated and committed to achieving your goals. If you need some goal-setting help, incorporate the SMART method to reach your full potential.
Make it Stick
Exercise is the best medicine for boosting your immune system and giving you the energy you need to power through your day. After committing to your fitness goals, it’s time to make your exercise routine sustainable. It might sound cliché but the best way to do that is to stick with it. If you stick with something, you build confidence. As you continue to build more confidence through your commitment to exercise and health, you start feeling empowered. Make it happen—you deserve to feel empowered. It’s your time to shine. We’ll be cheering you on!
